What do you do when you can´t sleep?

I have to admit that I am very good at sleeping, an avid sleeper so to say. To bed at nine most of the time, out of the bed at six, a nap when home from work, a nap in front of my TV, even though I actually I wanted to finish a book, a nap with my daughter instead of doing maths - hubby says that he has never seen someone who needed that much sleep. Unfortunately there comes a point when my body says: enough sleep, battery is full loaded -and I suffer from a bout of insomnia for the next week. Or weeks, one never knows. I am not a person who lays awake and mulls over every stupid decision made in my life. That might be a too bit much to brood about, so I skip that part. When we still had our old bedroom in my current studio, I had a clock radio with a huge red display, and I made up funny math games involving the digits. The clock radio is still there, only that it´s out of my visual range. Yes, I am short-sighted. No, I do not intend to search for my glasses in the dark, and no, again, I can´t switch on the bedside lamp to maybe get them, because bedside lamp is not located at the nightstand but next to the radio clock, in the bookshelf, out of my groping range. Besides, the nightly math games got boring anyway, that´s why hubby bought me a kindle reader to bridge the sleepless nights. Splendid idea! The first night I turned it on hubby sat upright in the blink of an eye, so confused he was because of the blinding light in the bedroom. Must have thought a mini UFO had landed on the neighbouring bed. I got into the habit of reading under the blanket, a sweat-inducing business, I must say, but still I glow like a lightning bug. Hubby does not like it at all. He gets up, does what elderly men do during night and bumps back into the bed like a rabid WWE catcher, the marital bed swaying like mad. I am no way a slender person, but today he did it- shot me unintentionally out of my own bed. That´s it. Next time he does that stunt he can continue his sleep in the guest room. I never dropped out of a bed of late, save the accident in Edinburgh, when I failed to notice that the bed was a poorly maintained water bed. I did a somersalt backwards when plummeting down on the mattress. Did not even know I was able to do that!

Ever since my husband died, I listen to audible books at night - all night long, while I'm sleeping, on a low volume. It's kind of a white noise that helps keep nightmares away (you don't even want to hear about some of the doozies I had right after he died), and it's great if I can't sleep - I just listen to the book for a bit. Interestingly, I have a favorite group of books that I rotate and use over and over.

I´d love to do that, too, but we live in a rather quiet city district with usually next to no noise making it into the bedroom from outside, so I fear that hubby will complain again, even if I use ear-phones. It´s interesting that I, too, have about five books that I always read during my sleepless nights. Must be comforting!

I suffer from insomnia once a month, usually when it is full moon. I get up and watch TV, that´s lulling me to sleep again. I wish my sofa was not so uncomfortable! Your hubby sucks!

Hubby sucks indeed, because he does not tolerate my kindle in bed.
