Please shoot me...
Oct. 30th, 2013 09:32 pmI have been looking for a specific fic for ages, it seems. I did not recall the title, so I did a rough draft of the content and posted a request to the community, to support me in my search. Yes, I got a few hints, one of them apparently from the author himself, who unfortunately always posts his entries anonymously. Mistake number one: Do not tell the author you did prefer the first version of his tale to the second and third one, and much less if the revised version has been published and is considered sacrosanct.
Overnight a flash of inspiration took hold of my brain: hadn´t I saved the fic a few years ago, when I was completely merged in that fandom (which was about five years later than the other enthusiasts)? So on Sunday I went through the content of my USB flash drives. Yes, I do own a lot of them, because I am a real champion in blasting PCs, so that´s what usually remains of their content. Oh, I found a lot of interesting things I did not even know I had saved. And then I thought I had it, but, as usual, no such luck. Here comes mistake number two: Same name, wrong fic. I had stored the second part of the fic, twice. Better safe than sorry. Two are better than one. Well, that´s me. Meanwhile the first part of the fic has been taken down. Most likely it had been taken down even before I decided to save it (yes, I am a lazy bum, a stitch in time saves nine does not work for me), and the double saving was an accident, because the second part of the fic is still accessible for readers, even if it´s hard to find and the titles of the chapters differ greatly at the two places I´ve found them. Anyway, the original version of the tale isn´t accessible anymore, that´s how it goes with fiction now published in books. And I am at a loss what to do next, continue the search or simply surrender, since I have duped the one who has written the fic. This is what happens if you can´t keep your mouth shut and try to be witty. Plus: I won´t post to that community anymore, because all of the entries are crossposted to Facebook and I greatly dislike this way of action. That´s why I can´t openly harass other community members and ask them if one of them has possibly done better than me and still owns a copy of the one chapter I desperately want to reread! I´m such a f...idiot!
