Yesterday must have been an aberration concerning weather, because today it is cold, stormy and rainy again. Everything of interest is happening indoors, and I can tell you, it is not much. The most exciting moment today was when I turned on the oven- and nothing happened. Just when I thought the next electric device had just died on me hubby found the solution for the problem, reset the clock and all was okay again. Saved by the bell, I thought I´d have to do the toasted bread with cheese, ham and avocados in the microwave, which surely would have ended in disaster aka avocado goes flying. Had it once, do not need a repeat.
Oh, I did a short tour de garden after lunch, because I was interested what neighbour´s cat had found in the grass. It was a blind worm, a big one at that. Not a clue why cat was so intent on munching away this one, so I chased cat away and carried the poor creature to the adjacent property where the grass is high and chances are better for hiding. I had to chase the cat off twice more, then it gave up. I love blind worms, they are so cute!
Oh, and a not so cute spider made it into the kitchen. It might have made it under the larder, but Vaire cat was hard on the spider´s heels, so I took notice of what was happening. As you know already how much I love those ugly beasts, you can picture the outcome to yourself. Vaire was rather upset because I killed her snack. With all that wood hubby is bringing in from outside to feed the fireplace, there´s likely more of those spiders trying to roam the house. Yuck!
I am very envious of my friend, who is sailing the Mediterranean Sea for two weeks. Weather there is way better than here though not as warm as it could be. Now let us hope that she manages to stay on board and come back to show me the photos of her trip. With cats so old and frail, daughter off to Finland in August and Corona still lying in ambush we cannot even think of leaving the house for a holiday. That´s mean, really mean …

Today is the first of the four most important Raunächte of this year´s dark season. We do not only celebrate the twelve nights between Christmas Eve and Epiphany, we start with the so-called Thomas-night, the longest night of the year. As a folk where many of us live in a mountainy countryside with rough climate we still have strange archaic rites for those long dark nights, rites that not always go well with Christian practises. "Raunächte" are a part of heathen traditions that have made it into our time, like burning incense in the house while reciting incantations to keep the house safe, and strange flocks of creepy figures wandering from house to house, allegedly bringing luck to the residents, but only in case your house is clean as a whistle and you have done well during the year. It is the time of oracles and animals speaking in the middle of the night, and the doors to the otherworld wide open for the souls dwelling there. No whites get hung on the washing lines, because this means that a beloved person is to die the following year. My grandmother did indeed cling to those rites and told us eerie stories about what might happen if one did not stick to tradition, and my sister and I were terrified. Till then the both of us had thought that a krampus was the most terrifying thing. Something must have gone very wrong last dark season, not enough incense burning or a clothes line put in a place where the "Wilde Jagd" got entangled and was no more able to do its luck bringing -and that´s why a dangerous virus made it into the world. Don´t laugh, I have met old farmers who believe in this imterpretation. Superstition is still a widespread factor of our folk culture!
I have done most of the Christmas preparations, the house is clean, we are to pick up the turkey on Wednesday near number three´s domicile, only that hubby will have do it alone. Namo´s health has detoriated once again. He has lost weight, has not fed for two days in a row now, he suffers from diarrhea and is vomitting way too often. Of course, he is shedding like mad, which causes indigestion, but I fear this might be the beginning of the end... Not nice so close to Christmas, when all the grandchildren are on the way to pet and cuddle him, because he always loves to get cuddled, even from the little ones! Vaire is off the moment they enter the house, hiding behind the safe, which is a very good hiding place even though the safe is more like a decorative item. No one ever has put money or jewellery into it. Number four and five are just trying to get some fluids into Namo, but the more they feed him the quicker the output...

Most of the cats do it, out of love people say, at times bringing home the trophies they´ve caught during their daily hunt to prevent their owners from starving, this way letting them know they´re cherished though they are incapable of hunting for themselves, missing all those funny creatures a cat would hunt down in a wink. Mr. Tails does it, too, he brings me mice. Not that often, and fortunately only those with the head missing, this way I can be sure I won´t have a wee mousie frolicking around in my house during night, though I do love mousies, a lot! The two females do it, carrying mole crickets onto my terrace, placing them at my feet, observing my reaction and afterwards the crickets trying to flee into the safety of the meadow, only that they never come that far before being brought back to my feet, where they usually expire. Pirate Cat does it, though he delivers his prey at my neighbour´s subtenant: slow worms, fish and frogs, and all four of the kois the vet has bought for her pond. Pirate Cat has got hit by some car driver who took no notice of the "private road- do not enter" sign and passed through at high speed. Vet was able to save the cat´s leg, but the eye was a lost cause, so no more mice and birds for Pirate Cat, because he is too slow. My cats do not hunt outside. What do they bring to me then? Well, Namo never brought me anything, because edible creatures are...edible, and feeding is Namo´s favourite occupation. Maybe he even has thought of bringing me a "tasty" little present, after all Namo is a nice guy and loves to sit on your lap for hours on end, though no one seems to appreciate it (might be because of the twenty pounds he weighs), but was not able to withstand the temptation and devoured the present instead of delivering it. That´s Namo all over! And Vaire? She brings me...spiders. Big fat ones. She catches them in the winter garden, plays with them and often kills them as a gift for me. Now comes the important part: Vaire is not even allowed to stay in the winter garden because of the plants. The toxic-to-cat plants, strictly speaking. So she arranges the (half)-dead spiders right in front of the doorstep to the winter garden, scratches at the door, waits for me to let her in and then watches the spectacle from a safe lookout in the parlour. And what a spectacle it is, me swinging the broom to squish those unfortunate spiders, most but not all of them dead. Yesterday Vaire caught six really big ones, neatly arranging them in a row for me to find the remains. I haven´t seen a living spider in the Winter garden for many a month, and yet Vaire tracks them down regularly. And she is so proud of having caught them! So after the usual screaming fit I give her a treat, otherwise she would think her owner to have gone mad, not appreciating the value of her gift!
