Today was the annual Wild Garlic Pesto Day. Hubby went into the woods, came back with a huge bag of wild garlic soon after and spent midmorning with washing and drying the greens. After lunch daughter-in-law (the pregnant one) showed up to help me, even though making pesto is not that complicated and time-consuming. All the hard work is done by Mixnix, our food processor, so the only thing I could entrust her was the roasting of the pine nuts, which she managed without burning them. Don´t laugh, if you have a toddler tied to your leg even pine nut roasting can turn into a veritable disaster. Today we used up 1 kilo wild garlic, half a kilo Parmesan, 400 gramm pine nuts, 400 gramm pumpkin seeds and almost two litres of canola oil plus salt and (too much) pepper, this one giving me another good sneezing fit. All that added up to 31 jars of pesto. Some of it migrated to number two´s house, because he is is the only one out of five who likes wild garlic. Now our house reeks like a giant garlic bulb, which means that tomorrow will be the annual Keep Your Windows Open Day, regardless of how strong the wind outside will blow.
Pregnant daughter-in-law´s brother´s family is struck down by Corona. The two girls have a slight cough and that´s all, but their parents are way worse off, the mother is in hospital now. Totally not funny is that they both caught the plague two weeks after their first vaccination with Astra Zeneca. One week later, and things might have looked better for them. With Astra it takes three weeks to get partial protection. Two weeks - nada. You better hide in your own four walls (like you have done before) if you live in a high risk area! I signed up for vaccination yesterday. Because I am overweight, have asthma and am in regular contact with a pregnant family member I won´t have to wait until autumn but might get my first jab in June already. Hah! Isn´t that lovely? I am so glad that hubby abstained from booking a trip to Greece this summer. I am not so sure if we´d be able to hit the time slot between lockdown four and five with our first vaccination appointments so late!
