We went to Germany a tad later than planned, because daughter mine had not yet done her shopping list for the things I was to pick up for her. No problem, who does not want another cup of coffee in the morning while waiting... The drive was uneventful, no traffic jam at the border, as it often is on Mondays (trucks aplenty, border control). But the shops were crowded, all of them, and a lot of shelves showed huge gaps, where items were no more in stock. Personal care products, pet food, dairy products, oil, cleaning agents- can somebody please tell me what's up now? Shortages everywhere, and no real reason behind it? I mean, dairy products here mostly get produced in Germany. I have not heard of a shortage of cows. Besides, beef was in stock, and not a bit more expensive than last time I came here for shopping. Some people are hoarding. There was a family with a cart full of toiletries that must last until the end of next year. There was a lady buying cat food for a whole shelter, though she had only one cat. Yes, I met her in the shop and gave her a piece of my mind. Sorry not sorry, but there are moments when I won´t hold myself back. A shopping cart filled to the brim with canned cat food and kibbles- two more of such idiots, and half of the shelves will be empty. Okay, I think that two idiots must have preceded her already. But I got the last bag of kibble Vaire cat loves. Will last until the end of October, plenty of time for refilling my stock.
I had needed Hokkaido pumpkins for Halloween cooking (soup, cake with bacon and a sweet one), but I was definitely not ready to pay two euros for one kilo. I decided that I would have to try again on our side of the border. We just made it home minutes before the big rain started. My friend, daughter and I had a lot more coffee in the conservatory, and even more fun. Hubby did not believe the weather forecast, picked up the flowers and the bouquet for All Saints´ Day I had bought in the flower shop- even got three tiny mums for free- and drove to the cemetary. He came back home soaked to the bone- well, we had warned him... He also had bought Hokkaido pumpkins for one euro per kilo. That´s a very good price, I´d say. I made hubby some tea, while he got changed. Blessedly though it´s rainy, it´s definitely too warm for October. I would not mind if it stayed this way for the rest of the season and the next one, too. I do not like snow, I do not like cold, and least of all I like excessive heating bills. I do not even need snow for Christmas, but I remember there was a time, when my sister and I were at the windows of our children´s room, flattening our noses while waiting for the snow to fall. That changed a lot, when we had our driving licenses, and our dad would not lend us his car, when there was snow on the streets...
Tomorrow I will have to make the broth for DiL´s ramen. Her brother is coming for a visit, and he loves ramen. Now if only his sister would finally be able to do the recipe on her own, but no...
