Who the heck has designed the brooch Thranduil is wearing in the Hobbit? That thing looks like an damned spider! Or maybe a sprouting potatoe. I´d go for the potatoe, because why would someone wear a gem resembling a spider when spiders are currrently giving him a rough time? Then again, why would a king wear a jewel around his neck which looks like a potatoe-gem set in silver buddings? Or should the brooch depict a beetle? Let´s go for the beetle. Even the Egyptians had beetle-shaped jewellery and charms, although those scarabs were associated with sun and fertility, which is what has been lacking in Mirkwood for quite some time. Maybe by wearing this piece of jewellery the woodland-king hopes to increase the fertility rate?
