The low buzzing noise of bikes started early in the morning and increased during rainy midmorning. Yes, it´s Ascension Day here, an official holiday in my country, and many people would have liked to spend the morning in bed, to finally get the sleep last night´s thunderstorms had thwarted. Seriously, I am not a light sleeper, but the constant claps of thunder had kept me awake till four in the morning. So what did my brain try to tell me? Ascension Day? Heavy rain and low temperatures outside, and yet lots of motorcycles on their way? Hooray, it´s Father´s Day in Germany, and as we have bendy roads aplenty here, a must-drive for hardened and wannabe bikers, our mountain roads are full of kamikaze drivers on this special day, so better stay at home, to be on the safe side. That´s when all of a sudden my brain told me to go and search for The Butt, written by Günter Grass, a longtime favourite of mine, sadly neglected over the years. Now I´m in my studio, happily reading along, ignoring the downpour outside. In the evening, when hopefully all of the bikers have found their way back safe and sound, I will pick up a friend and we will drive to the cinema and have a drink afterwards, in honour to all German Fathers who so mulishly insist on bike rides despite rainy weather!
