Went to the German Amazon site today morning for the deals of the day, and because I might finally replace my LotR box set which is quite old, battered and scratched after years of (ab)use. There was a new box set among the deals; what really confused me was the fact that the LotR trilogy was rated three and a half stars while the way weaker Hobbit trilogy got four and a half stars. Odd, I thought, and because there was aplenty ironing looming in the bedroom I did elegantly sidestep the piles of clothing and began an all-important investigation why people here would favour the Hobbit. Seems that the picture company has done a lousy job with the German soundtrack of LotR which runs too deep and hence gives the characters unnatural depth, and that even now those defective copies float about via Amazon. My old DVDs seemed to be okay up to the day I watched the pictures in English. You´d have needed a deaf aid to get through the films. Maybe I should have written a one star review, too, not because of the quality of the picture itself but because of the technical defects that spoil people´s enjoyment of watching it. What I´ll do now is look for the one comment which had a list with the serial numbers of defective copies in it, and compare those with the ones on Amazon. Or I´ll drive into town and ignore Amazon´s offers and support local shops instead. Then again, it´s snowing outside, and it´s colder than it was in winter...
