Good Friday should be a day of reflection. Not for me apparently, because son number two decided that this day would be a good day to cook with family. Means that I will do the cooking and then we will eat together. Pregnant daughter-in-law is not so fond of cooking at the moment. So it is Ramen day today. I simmered the marinated meat yesterday evening, cut all the vegetables for a proper infusion so that I´d get a nice consommé then poured the boiling hot soup over the veggies, to let it rest for about an hour. Afterwards I parked my lazy self in front of the TV. After half an hour I thought I´d hear a blubbering sound from the kitchen. Oh no, I thought, that just can´t be true! But oh yes, I had forgotten to turn off the stove. Now I had a lot of cooked vegetables and a soup that certainly was no consommé. I have to admit at that time I did not bother anymore. It´s soup, and mixed with tare you won´t see the difference. Today daughter-in-law told me that she will only eat lean meat. And she wants pak choi. Just great, because I had chosen pork belly to have at least a bit of fat from the soup for aromatic oil, to season the ramen bowl. And my pak choi has almost died in the fridge, blessedfully only almost. I still found a few usable leaves, and this has to be enough. No way I will do another trip into town! Since no pork fillet was to be found in the freezer husband dearest had to do his third shopping trip of the day, not that he´d complain about it. This man really is a shopping addict! Now that all preparations are done daughter-in-law found two duck breasts in her fridge which will expire tomorrow. She´d prefer it with orange sauce and potato dumplings but cannot do this herself, because, you know, she is pregnant. Well, hello? I did not know that I was managing a canteen! And on Good Friday at that! So hubby will do the duck and the sauce, yet the dumplings I will have to make myself (those which husband does you could easily use in a tennis match as a replacement for the tennis ball). And in between we will have to pick up number two at the end of the bus line and number four at the rail station. Good thing is that the whole rigmarole will end at seven at the latest, because that´s the time when Cassian is tired enough to be brought to bed. And I am pretty sure there will be enough soup and meat left for tomorrow, unless this time it is hubby who finds some hidden goodies in our fridge that need imminent cooking...
