My friend has a wasps´ nest close to her terrace door, and at the end of July wasps tend to get a bit aggressive, so she was afraid some of those would get into her flat and sting the cats in case her cats wanted to play with wasps (mine do, but till this day did not get stung). So she wanted to burn out the nest! Bad idea, I´d say, and I told her so!
I think it was two years ago when I sat in our neighbour´s (God rest his soul, he passed away this spring) gazebo and talked with him about ways to get rid of wasps´ nests. He proudly told me that he had eliminated a big one that very morning. Unfortunately there still were quite a lot of wasps trying to get access to the garage where the nest had been situated, and son-in-law found some parts of it still intact. Neighbour brought out the gas burner and burned off what was left of the wasps´ home, then closed the garage door. I had another glass of wine when I suddenly saw grey smoke coming from inside the garage. Not only had our neighbour torched the nest but the rafter in the garage, too! Out came the garden hose, and, better safe than sorry, the garage was kind of flooded and a vigil organized, to keep the smouldering fire in check. When I told the story to my friend she laughed and assured that the nest was definitely situated on the wall only, so no big deal to burn it out. What she did not take in consideration was that parts of the nest might come off with a lot of the critters still alive and well. Truth to be told, she barely made it into the flat before the wasps got her, and then she had to sit in her living room while watching her cats watch the remaining wasps furiously buzz around. Now that it´s dark outside she´ll dare to go outside again, to throw what´s left of the nest into the garden below. May her neighbour find a way to get rid of those pests, so she says! What a way to keep on good terms with your neighbourhood!
