Hubby and I left after the big birthday party to spend two weeks in a small village on Karpathos. The first vacation for us that would last longer than a week. Namo and Vaire were to get fed by one of our children, depending on who was at home, the plants outside would get watered by our neighbour, the plants inside are mostly succulents and do not need watering. So off we were to the train to Vienna airport. After three days of Greek idyll in a small village with a small herd of tourists but great taverns serving local food hubby got a call from one of his sisters: my father-in-law's health had deteriorated swiftly (he has battled cancer for many years), hubby should better come home quickly. Come home. From Greece. Quickly. Hubby got a flight for the two of us for yesterday. Father-in-law did not want to wait that long and died the same day we got the call. So we are back home and will at least be able to attend the funeral, which will be tomorrow. Sister must have banked on hubby´s ability to conjure return tickets ahead of schedule, or did not give a damn if her brother was even able to come back in time. Sister is also the reason why only my boys will come to the funeral. Daughter has packed her suitcase and returned to Innsbruck. She left a note that she was not ready for another fight with her aunt, not at the funeral. Hubby agreed with her. Last time´s family meeting turned into a veritable disaster when precious daughter mine asked her grandfather if he yet knew that he had more than one grandchild (he had been talking about that special guy the whole day long but never asked if the other ten grand children were doing well), with said grandchild´s mother nearby! Needless to say hubby´s sister was not amused and tried to give my daughter a good verbal lashing but got one from my daughter instead. Daughter usually is a very placid and well educated girl. But listening to her sharp-tongued but truthful speech directed at her blanching aunt made me fear that she might get problems to find a suitable husband one day. Hubby's sister and who else is left of his family mercifully live at least 200 kilometres apart from us, and chances are that we won´t meet too often in the near future, so if tomorrow everything goes well we might be able to delay the next family dispute for some years.
But now let´s change the subject: Hubby has already found the place he wants to spend our next holidays. This is a picture of Kasos, an even smaller island next to Karpathos. It looks quite pretty, but if hubby downsizes his holiday destinations a couple times more we will spend our summers sitting on a small rock in the Aegean sea.
