[protected post]Never forget the password of all passwords

Oh dear! Now that I have retired there never seems to enough time to sit down and make an entry to my LJ! That´s odd, because now I am home more often, even having handed the joys of grocery shopping over to hubby, while I do the practical things that make a house a home. Once a month I meet up with my best friend (yeah, even old girls like me do have one), and that´s the day hubby, who is usually a night person and seldom found in bed before one in the morning though he is the one who has to get up early, will be in bed before midnight. I think he is envious because we ladies have so much fun- save for last week, when my friend was in tears when she let me into her flat. No, no one of her family had died. She had not lost her job, because she has retired two years ago. Her pregnant daughter is well and expecting her second child. It´s her laptop that caused trouble, or more precisely, the password she had created to protect her most personal files, to finally have a place where she can put all her passwords for her many personal accounts. She had been working on it all day, meticulously going through her notebooks to not miss any, had put all into a file together with her many virtual photo albums, had typed in her new password-et viola, no other person than her was now able to get into her sphere of privacy- or so she thought. Yet from then on things went down the tubes. There was a phone call after she had finished cataloguing, and then she had to tidy up, so the notebooks went into the bin and the bin got emptied out, because no one wants to have a full one when guests are coming, and after everything was ready for my visit she tried to re-open the file she had created, to no avail. My friend had been in a hurry and had not recorded the mother of all passwords. And now she cannot open the document and get to her other passwords. Some of them she knows by heart and some of them not, unfortunately. The loss of all her photos is worst. If I were in her place I´d be in the refuse skip in search of my bin bag to at least have access to all of my accounts, all the more because my friend is pretty sure she has used one of the old passwords, though with different numbers, while she thinks she will one day recall the correct password. I have wanted to do the password thing for a long time, especially after I had skimmed through the content of my USB thumb drives, all of them. I thought to put everything in a password-protected file would be worth a try, should someone accidentally get lost in my personal recordings and then go blind from shock. I am not so sure now. I already have problems to memorise my passwords used for lJ, Facebook or Pinterest. Maybe it´s a good thing that I do not possess a Mac, where password protected files are easier to create than with Windows!
