Me: Let´s have a look at what we need for chocolate cookies: chocolate, cocoa powder, grated nuts, sugar, egg whites...now look, there´s no hint if we have to beat the egg white, but of course we will do so....mum! You can´t simply poor the egg white in the dough...
Mum: Always did so!
Me: No, you did not! You always beat the egg white...
Mum: In it goes! Dough looks fine...cookies are fine...

As expected, one hour after baking the cookies turned hard as stone. Will give them to my first-graders. See, no more wobbly teeth!
Today mum has left with my sister, to spend Christmas in Germany. My children are so very sad (cough), and my niece, who has come from Vienna to travel back with her mum, is livid, because she´d envisaged a cheerful Christmas with parents and brother and now has to cope with a dragon in reserve. And tomorrow they will bake cookies together, hooray! Please do not forget to beat the egg white, dear Clare, no matter what your grand ma tells you! Of the two girls my mother has born I´m usually the calm, placative one, but after having had my share of mum´s behaviours and attitudes (let´s cross fingers that I won´t turn out the same way), it´s more than fair that my sister has to look after her this year´s Christmas! I´ve stocked up on apples, sherry and brandy and will wassail in the true sense of the word to a Merry Christmas to all!
